What makes a good rehearsal

In order to have a good rehearsal, you must:

  • Set up equipment, tune instruments
  • Make sure each group member knows the song well enough
  • Talk less and focus on working more
  • Don't eat food
  • Don't mess about
  • Agree on a song that everyone likes

Response to the brief

The brief: To perform 15 mins of music in a school concert for a charity event.

The audience will likely be: People in their 10s-60s

Their musical interests will likely be: Rock

Therefore my music must be: Guns and Roses, Led zeppelin, Ozzy Osbourne

When I thought about the audience, I initially thought that they would be aged from 10-60, as people that age tend to like rock. I associated people over 60 with being into music from older eras. However many people in or above their 70s are into rock as they were alive during the 60s, when rock was popular. Many people who were in bands in the 60s are now in their 70s such as Mick Jagger, Paul Mccartney and Neil Young. Therefore I asked my grandparents, parents and uncles what music they listened to and found that people from older generations do listen to rock music.

As rock is a very wide genre, people from different age groups may be into certain sub genres such as heavy rock, blues, metal, classic or alternative. Therefore I have included songs from a a variety of subgenres such as classic rock-Stairway To Heaven, hard rock-Guns and Roses and Metal-Crazy. Train.

Instrumental Lesson Diary

Week 1 This week I created an instrumental intro to my song and recorded it.
What I wanted to do:
What I actually did:
Did this work towards my goals?:
What do I need to improve for next time?
I wanted to make an intro that uses open chords and builds up to the bridge and riff. I think that I achieved my goal as the open chord progression worked well on building up to the bridge. To improve I could think of a lead guitar piece to play over the top of the chords.

Week 2 This week I thought of a bridge and added it to the recording. I wanted to compose a bridge that created a transition from the intro to the main riff. The bridge I made worked well and didn't need any improvement.

Week 3 This week I created a chord progression for the main riff. I tried to create a simple, catchy guitar riff using power chords. We recorded it on the schools amp which did not give it a great sound, therefore to improve I could bring in my own guitar and amp.

Week 4 This week I started on a new song and created an intro which also used open chords but was more melodic. This time I recorded it using my own guitar and amp to get a better sound.

Week 5 This week I created a bridge and chord progression. I wanted to create a more advanced riff in a different tempo.

Week 6 This week I started to compose a guitar solo.

Prep-Goals

1. I want to become a better guitarist and drummer, and learn my 3 songs which are Sweet Child of Mine, Stairway To Heaven and Crazy Train.

2. My goals are the same as they were when I first wrote my blog.

3. I do think that I am achieving these goals because I'm always playing guitar and I've been practicing the songs at home. I now know most of the songs.

4.I don't have a drum kit so I can't practice drums at home.

5.I need to focus on learning different parts of the song.

6. I need to learn the solo for Sweet Child Of Mine, Stairway To Heaven and Crazy Train.

Overall at the end of this course I want to be able to play my songs and solos. I want to become a more confident performer and have more experience performing on a live stage.
